Money Saving Tips

Save some money!
- Take care of leaky windows and doors. They can be a significant source of loss of efficiency in both heating and cooling. If you can, install a storm door to stop drafts and check all your windows to be sure they are fully closed and sealed.
- Set your thermostat to one temperature with which you can be comfortable. Constant changing of the settings without planning can result in excessive use of energy.
- If you can, install a programmable thermostat. These devices allow you to modulate the equipment usage in accord with the times when there is peak demand for your comfort.
- If yours is a forced air system, be certain to change filters in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Once every month is the most common time frame suggested.
- If there are children in your home, be sure that they know that exterior doors are meant to be closed.
- If you have an attached garage, insulate the exterior walls. Many homes were built with insulation only in the garage ceiling and the walls it shares with the living area. By adding insulation to the other exterior walls, and even the garage door itself, you can make the garage an additional buffer from the heat or cold of the season.
- Keep registers, outlets and radiators unobstructed. Heating and cooling is efficient when air moves. When the vents or radiators are covered or blocked, your heating and cooling units are working at an extremely inefficient manner.
- Check your attic’s insulation. Older houses may exhibit collapsed insulation which reduces its capacity to provide satisfactory insulation. Almost all insulation products rely on trapping air in space to provide the insulation rating. Additional insulation, properly installed, can be a huge help in reducing your costs to heat and cool your home. Insulate the backside of any access doors to the attic or eave areas of the house.
- Use the individual controls at the vents or radiators in each room to balance the amount of treated air or heated water between rooms.
- Investigate any payment plans which allow you to set a monthly budget for energy consumption for the year. Variations in usage on a month to month basis may indicate that there exists in your home a recurring loss of efficiency.
- During the heat of the summer, draw the blinds or drapes on those windows exposed to the daytime sunlight. There’s no sense in trying to cool air which the sun is heating up.
- During the winter, use that sunlight to help elevate the temperature in the house by keeping the windows uncovered with blinds, curtains or drapes.
- If your home is built on a crawl space, close the vents during the winter and open them during the summer.
- To stop any loss of either heated or cooled air to the outside is the best goal of anyone who wishes to cut the costs of heating and cooling. Equipment produced today is far more efficient than that installed ten or twenty years ago, but even today’s equipment can be enhanced by cutting the loss of the treated air.
